Australian landscape photography & stock images by Tim Aickin

After an early career in photojournalism and commercial photography in Melbourne and Sydney, Tim Aickin has, for the last twenty years, been living and photographing in the Bellingen region.

During these years Tim has amassed a unique collection of images from the north coast area - national parks, rivers, creeks, rainforest, coastal, wildlife, landscapes, townscapes, local festivals, industry and sport, as well as his historical urban images of Balmain, Sydney taken in the early 1980's.

The photo library also includes images from Sydney, other areas of New South Wales, Queensland and New Zealand.

Tim continues to produce new images.

Tim Aickin has spent many years developing his particular style of Australian landscape photography. With a background in film, Tim's digital era began in 2006, and his style is informed by his film days - using a natural style with a wide dynamic range - (Ansel Adams style!). His reworking ("retouching") of his digital negatives brings out the essence of a scene, not adding or altering what was there. Just as Ansel Adams was the king of dodging and burning (to get details in shadows and highlights that otherwise would have been lost) so these techniques are used to remedy the shortcomings of the digital sensor, rather than creating a new reality.

Tim was able not only to carry through his experience into the digital world but also his extensive collection of photographic hardware, with a large selection of Nikkor prime lenses ensuring sharp and contrasty images. Formerly shooting panoramas on medium format, Tim is now using Virtual Reality techniques to create extremely high resolution panoramic shots - which can easily reach 30 megapixels. Digital technology has surpassed film in quality; at least in this genre.

Tim prints most of the work available on this site himself, so he has ultimate quality control of the work generated. (He uses pigment ink printers and archival media to ensure that prints have a longer lifespan than any of the traditional chemical colour processes).

This website is focused on Tim's Gallery. Feel free to browse his prints, search for keywords - places or subjects, or contact Tim for commissions, bigger prints or commercial work.
